Zach Cregger already in early talks for ‘Weapons’ prequel

(Warning: light spoilers for Weapons ahead)

Filmmaker Zach Cregger is reportedly already in early talks for a Weapons prequel film – find out more below.

Per an exclusive report from The Hollywood Reporter, Cregger has found himself in early discussions with Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema for an origin film set in the Weapons universe.

Weapons released in cinemas worldwide earlier this month, and has been a critical and commercial success so far. It stars an ensemble cast including Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Benedict Wong, Amy Madigan, and Cary Christopher.

The prequel film will reportedly focus on Amy Madigan’s character Gladys Lilly – who (SPOILERS AHEAD) serves as the film’s big bad. While Weapons is a non-linear story that explores multiple viewpoints of an entire classroom’s worth of children mysteriously going missing on the same night, the film never explores Gladys’ perception of the events.

The prequel film is supposedly going to explore her backstory and what leads to her treacherous role in the children’s disappearance. Gladys’ backstory was reportedly part of the original Weapons draft, but was cut by director Zach Cregger due to length constraints.

The Hollywood Reporter‘s sources have noted that no deals have been made for the prequel film yet, and a timeline for its release has not been discussed. Cregger currently has a number of other projects on his slate – including an upcoming Resident Evil film, and an original film he’s working on titled Flood.

Most recently, Cregger has confirmed that Austin Abrams will lead the upcoming Resident Evil adaptation as an original character. “It’s gonna be not at all like Barbarian and Weapons. It’s going to be a rock ’em, sock ’em [movie]. It’s for me to play and turn my brain off and just get crazy with the camera. Austin Abrams is gonna be my guy. Austin is the movie. We have an amazing thing together. It’s a weird, fun, wild story,” Cregger explained.

“I’m not going to tell Leon’s story, because Leon’s story is told in the games. Fans already have that,” Cregger said of the film earlier in July. Cregger previously warned hardcore gamers that they might hate his movie because it’s not a direct adaptation.
