JADE led a chant during her set at Mighty Hoopla in which the crowd said “fuck you” to JK Rowling.

The festival, known for its celebration of queer culture, is currently taking place in Brockwell Park, south London and continues today (June 1).

JADE performed yesterday and as she played ‘FUFN (Fuck You For Now)’, she lead the crowd to yell “Fuck you,” in response to mention of homophobes, transphobes and the controversial Harry Potter author.

The call-and-response went: “Misogynoir? FUCK YOU! Performative allyship? FUCK YOU! Homophobes? FUCK YOU! Transphobes? FUCK YOU! J. K. Rowling? FUCK YOU!”

At another point in the set, JADE credited Little Mix’s LGBTQ+ fanbase for helping them progress in their careers as much as they did.

“I absolutely adore my Little Mix girls and I’m so so proud of everything we achieved together. And I know for a fact that if it wasn’t for this [LGBTQ+] fanbase here, we wouldn’t have been as successful as we were, so thank you,” she said.

JADE recently announced her debut solo album ‘THAT’S SHOWBIZ BABY!”, which will be out on September 12 and will feature collaborations with RAYE, Mike Sabath, Lostboy, Cirkut and Pablo Bowman.

She will also be touring the album across the UK in October. The run of shows kicks off in Dublin on October 8 before making stops in Belfast, Brighton, Manchester, Glasgow, Leeds, Birmingham and Newcastle. She will then sign off in London on October 19. Find tickets here.

Meanwhile, JADE recently teased Little Mix reunion with a cheeky lyric change during her Radio 1’s Big Weekend set last weekend.

The set included a version of ‘Wasabi’, a song from Little Mix’s fifth album ‘LM5’ in 2018. As the song reached its climax, JADE switched the track’s original lyric of “I bet they gonna break up / But what the hell do you know?” to “I bet they gonna break up / It’s a hiatus!”

In other news, Mighty Hoopla has recently been at the centre of controversy, along with various other festivals such as Field Day, over its ties to global investment company KKR. This is the parent company of Superstruct Entertainment, which includes stakes in weapons manufacturing companies, the Coastal GasLink pipeline, and multiple Israeli corporations that operate in occupied Palestinian territories (via MixMag).

Mighty Hoopla recently shared a statement regarding the ties to KKR, and said that while it “cannot control agreements or investments made in our parent companies”, it does want to “state our clear opposition to KKR’s unethical investments”.

Mighty Hoopla is a space to connect through music, fashion and culture. A space to escape the outside world, a space to feel safe. As an LGBTQ+ inclusive festival we take issues of complicity and transparency extremely seriously and without any knowledge, we have become caught up in something we unequivocally stand against.”

Explaining the festival’s stance towards the investor’s actions, it continued: “We recognise that the world’s highest court, the International Court of Justice ruled that Israel is plausibly committing genocide in Gaza and that it is practising apartheid and occupation against the Palestinian people.

“Whilst we cannot control agreements or investments made in our parent companies, we wish to state our clear opposition to KKR’s unethical investments. As a festival we will always use our platform to champion and fund other LGBTQ+ organisations, projects and charities as well as continuing to uplift brilliant queer artists across our shows. No owner or investor will ever change what Mighty Hoopla stands for and the community it serves.”
