Fontaines D.C. performing live on stage

Fontaines D.C. gave their recent single ‘Starbuster’ its live debut on US TV last night (May 7) – watch the video below.

The Dublin band appeared as the musical guests on yesterday’s episode of the NBC chat show The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. It came ahead of their intimate one-off show at the Warsaw venue in Brooklyn, New York tonight (May 8).

Bringing their experimental new sound to life, Fontaines D.C. were bathed in colourful studio lights throughout the simmering rendition of the tune. Frontman Grian Chatten also donned some old-school shades and a leather kilt as he commanded the stage.

In the video’s comments section, one fan wrote: “Love how they change the entire aesthetic for every new album.” Another viewer said: “Oooh the song comes even more alive live!!”

A third person called the Fallon performance “iconic”, adding: “One of the best bands of the last few years and they somehow keep getting better!”

‘Starburster’ serves as the first preview of Fontaines D.C.’s fourth album ‘Romance’, which is due for release on August 23 via XL Recordings (pre-order/pre-save here).

In a glowing five-star review of the track, NME noted that the band had “taken a perfect left turn” to usher in their next era.

It added: “Leaning on the Massive Attack trip-hop noir vibes first hinted at on [2022 album] ‘Skinty Fia’’s title track, ‘Starburster’ is a pensive art-rock beast that fuses elements of electronica and hip-hop more akin to their fellow striking countrymen (and recent collaboratorsKNEECAP.”

The upcoming ‘Romance’ was produced by James Ford (Arctic MonkeysFoalsDepeche Mode). Chatten has revealed that the project was inspired by his “fascination” with “falling in love at the end of the world”.

“The album is about protecting that tiny flame,” he said. “The bigger armageddon looms, the more precious it becomes.”

Fontaines D.C. have just announced a North American headline tour for this autumn, having previously confirmed shows in the UK, Ireland and Europe.

In addition to their own ‘Romance’ dates, Fontaines D.C. are scheduled to make appearances at GlastonburyReading & Leeds, Pukkelpop and Sziget among other festivals across the season. Find any remaining tickets here (UK and Ireland).
