‘Uncharted’ fans think a new game could be on the way

Uncharted fans think a new game could be in the works after it was confirmed a second project is in development at Naughty Dog.

The original Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune was released in 2007 and spawned a number of sequels and spin-offs. The last mainline Uncharted game was 2016’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, which received critical acclaim and was followed by 2017’s expansion, The Lost Legacy.

The game ends with treasure hunters Nate Drake and Elena Fisher telling their young daughter Cassie about their previous adventures, which felt like the perfect bookend to the series. Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann seems to agree as well. “For us, Uncharted was insanely successful — Uncharted 4 was one of our best selling games — and we’re able to put our final brushstroke on that story and say that we’re done. We’re moving on,” he said in a 2023 interview with Buzzfeed.

Late last year, Naughty Dog confirmed they were working on a new IP with Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Druckmann is creative director of the game, which will explore “what happens when you put your faith in different institutions” and feature a soundtrack from Nine Inch Nails.

However last night, Druckmann revealed another project was in the works at the studio. “Then there’s another game that’s being worked on at Naughty Dog where I’m in more of a producer role and I get to mentor, watch this other team, and give feedback and be like the executive in the room,” he said on the Press X To Continue podcast. “I enjoy all those roles, and the fact that I jump from one to the next makes my job very exciting and always feeling fresh. I’m never bored.”

Despite speculation about a third The Last Of Us game, it seems unlikely that Druckmann would let anyone else head up a new game in that universe. However many fans think this mysterious new project could be a new entry in the Uncharted series. “Really doubt it’s The Last Of Us since Neil would like to direct that one I bet and 2 new IPs at the same time seems risky as hell. It has to be Uncharted,” explained one fan.

“We definitely need more Uncharted! We at least need an online game. Uncharted 4 is 9 years old, and people still play online. There’s definitely a demand for it,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “I’m all for a new Uncharted, but it doesn’t need to be Nathan or his daughter. There is a great cast of characters with Chloe, Nadine, Sam, Sully, and Cutter. You could make plenty of amazing games with those 5,” added another. “Dude, I know they ‘gave a final brushstroke’ to Nate Drake but I’d love nothing more than ONE more game with him,” said a third.

Previously Druckmann said they’d only make a third The Last Of Us game if they could come up with “a compelling story that has this universal message and statement about love – just like the first and second game did,” so Naughty Dog aren’t opposed to sequels if the idea is strong enough.

Earlier today (May 20) the creators of HBO’s The Last Of Us confirmed the show will need a fourth season – and gaming fans aren’t happy: “They’re just dragging it out now.”

In other news, Hideo Kojima has revealed his Metal Gear-inspired “action espionage” game Physint won’t be released until 2030 at the earliest.
