Tom Cruise has praised horror hit Sinners, congratulating the star Michael B Jordan and director Ryan Coogler on what he calls a “must see” film.

Set in 1932 Mississippi, the film is the story of twin brothers (both played by Jordan) who open a speakeasy, which is beset by supernatural creatures on its opening night. The film made $48 million (£36million) in the United States and $77million (£58million) worldwide in its opening weekend, the largest debut for an original film since Jordan Peele’s US in 2019.

The film has also won over critics, currently boasting 98 per cent “fresh” rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

NME’s four-star review described it as a “devilishly good period piece”, continuing: If the Coen Brothers’ O Brother, Where Art Thou? and the Robert Rodriguez & Quentin Tarantino mash-up From Dusk Till Dawn had a love child, it might look something like this”.

Recently, Tom Cruise took to Instagram to add to that praise. The action legend shared a picture of himself in a cinema foyer holding a ticket for the film. His caption reads: “Congratulations Ryan, Michael, and to the entire cast and crew. Must see in a cinema and stay through the end credits!”

Star Jordan can be seen in the replies responding: “Thanks for the love and support!!!” The actor also took to his own Instagram account to thank fans for the movie’s success.

“Words can’t express the gratitude that I feel for everyone and the outpour of love for our film!! it’s a crazy feeling to know how many of you have showed up and continue to support this film,” he said. “This is why we make movies and love watching movies on the big screen. It brings people together!!

Recently, the iconic Chicago blues musician Buddy Guy talked about making a cameo in the film, saying of his decision to appear: “Whatever can help the blues stay alive, I’m all for it, and I will try anything. I said, I don’t know if I’m good enough to do that. But I’ll give it a try, and if it works, it works, and if it doesn’t, at least I’ll say I gave it a try”.
