There’s an ‘Alien: Romulus’ sequel on the way – and it starts filming soon
Alien: Romulus has a sequel in the works and director Fede Alvarez has said it may be released sooner than many expected.
Romulus arrived in cinemas in August 2024 and was set between the events of the original Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986). It starred Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) and David Jonsson (Industry, Rye Lane) and followed a group of young space colonists who are confronted with a mysterious extraterrestrial threat while scavenging around an abandoned space station.
Now, Alvarez has revealed that filming on the follow-up to Romulus is set to begin soon. Speaking to the Marea Nocturna podcast, he said that pre-production is already underway on the project, with the first scenes set to be shot in October (via Fangoria).
No release date has been confirmed, but given the outline Alvarez has suggested, a summer 2026 slot may be a possibility.
Romulus was a commercial and critical success, and in a five-star review, NME wrote: “With spot-on production design that really captures the worn-out feel of space travel that the Alien films so perfectly showed, the practical and visual effects, bringing that acid-dripping bitch back to life, are also superbly realised. With a gets-right-under-the-skin score from Benjamin Wallfisch, this is an Alien film for the ages. Finally, someone has made a movie that comes close to the brilliance of Ridley Scott and James Cameron.”
It also placed at Number Seven on NME’s list of the Top 20 Films of 2024, with NME noting: “Álvarez (Evil Dead, The Girl In The Spider Web) uses CGI relatively sparingly, preferring to rely on gritty practical effects that recall the hellish visions of OG filmmakers Ridley Scott and James Cameron. The result is a properly horrifying blockbuster that mixes sci-fi nostalgia with fresh thrills and spills that are genuinely chest-busting – well, almost.”
The next addition to the Alien universe will be Alien: Earth, a television series that will premiere on FX on August 12. Set two years before the 1979 original, it will star Sydney Chandler, Timothy Olyphant and Alex Lawther.
Alien: Romulus is streaming now on Disney+.
