Sydney Sweeney teases “more unhinged” ‘Euphoria’ season 3
Sydney Sweeney has discussed the upcoming season of Euphoria, promising it will be the most “unhinged” yet.
Filming is currently underway for the Sam Levinson-created show, about the lives, loves, and struggles of students in a California high school. The series has won nine Emmys so far, as well as praise from critics for its handling of subjects such as grief and addiction. Fan favourite characters include lead Zendaya as the troubled Rue, and Sweeney as Cassie, who makes questionable choices through a need for validation.
The second season of the show ended in February 2022, with Hollywood labour strikes delaying production on a follow-up, as well as the unexpected death of Angus Cloud, who played Fezco in the drama, and passed away in 2023 aged 25. However, with the show finally moving ahead, fans are eager to know all about what to expect.
In an interview with Empire Magazine, the star talked about her fondness for the role of Cassie, as well as returning to the part after three years for the third season.
“I have such a spot in my heart for Cassie, and I hold her really close and dear,” she said. “She is crazy. She makes so many mistakes. She’s flawed on so many levels, but she does it all from a place of love… Sam (Levinson) is such a brilliant filmmaker to work with, because I’ll read something, then I’ll call him, and I’m like, ‘Let’s go crazier’. And he’s like, ‘I’m all in’. And this season is unhinged”. When asked if it is more unhinged than previous seasons, she replied, “Yes”.
The actor, who also appeared in The White Lotus and rom-com movie Anyone But You, has talked about how the character has affected people’s perceptions of her away from the small screen.
“I think that with the amount of access, with social media, and how much content gets put out there of Cassie… People do have a hard time separating actors from their characters,” she said. “Especially someone like Cassie, where she is hated and she’s loved, but she’s definitely a complicated character. And so I think that that could confuse people, for sure. But if they’re hating me for decisions that my character is making, then I’m playing the character correctly.”
No exact air date has been announced for the new season, although executives revealed it should arrive in early 2026. Recently, singer Rosalía discussed appearing in Euphoria, calling her first foray into acting “really inspiring”.
