Sydney Sweeney says she gained 30 pounds in three months to play boxer Christy Martin
Sydney Sweeney has revealed she gained more than 30 pounds to play boxer Christy Martin in a new biopic.
The Euphoria star made headlines last year after posting her transformation for the role, which involved a different look from the one fans are used to from the actor. Speaking to W Magazine, Sweeney said she gained over 30 pounds for the part, and detailed the work involved.
“I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training,” she said. “I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour.”
She admitted to being surprised by the effects of the training. “My body was completely different,” Sweeney recalled. “I didn’t fit in any of my clothes. I’m usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27. My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy! I was like, ‘Oh my god’.”
She added: “But it was amazing: I was so strong, like crazy strong.”
The film, which is yet to be titled, tells the story of US boxer Martin, who came to prominence as one of the most successful female athletes of the ‘90s and ‘00s.
It also portrays her attempted murder at the hands of her then-husband, James Martin, who stabbed her multiple times and shot her in 2010. He was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2012.
In an Instagram post last October, Sweeney said of the role: “I’ve been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman — a true champion who fought battles both inside and outside the ring,” she wrote. “Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength, and hope, and I’m honoured to step into her shoes to share her powerful story with you all. more to come soon”.
Sydney Sweeney will also be seen in the forthcoming third season of Euphoria, which she promised will be “more unhinged” than before. The star also made headlines recently by announcing she will be selling soap infused with her bath water.
