‘Spaceballs 2’ announced with Rick Moranis, Mel Brooks and Bill Pullman returning – here’s when it’s coming out

After nearly 40 years, a Spaceballs sequel has been confirmed with several key stars from the 1987 original returning – find out more below.

Since its premiere in 1987, fans of the Mel Brooks, Rick Moranis and Bill Pullman-led sci-fi comedy have been clamouring for a sequel. Last night (June 12), Amazon MGM Studios finally confirmed a follow-up via an announcement video.

The video begins by taking shots at Star Wars – which if famously spoofed in the 1987 film – as well as franchises like Harry Potter, Star Trek and more. “Thirty-eight years ago, there was only one Star Wars trilogy. But since then, there have been… a prequel trilogy, a sequel trilogy, a sequel to the prequel, a prequel to the sequel, countless TV spinoffs, a movie spinoff of the TV spinoff which is both a prequel and a sequel…”

“Not to mention… 36 MCU movies with two different Robert Downey Jr.‘s, DCU attempt number 1, DCU attempt number 2, 8 Harry Potter movies, a TV series remaking the same 8 Harry Potter movies… but in thirty-eight years there has only ever been one Spaceballs… until now.”

Director and star of the first film Mel Brooks then showed up onscreen, saying the following: “After 40 years, we asked ‘What do the fans want?’ but instead, we’re making this movie. May the Schwartz be with you.”

While a firm release date has yet to be set, Spaceballs 2 is currently scheduled for a 2027 release.

Mel Brooks is set to reprise his role as Yogurt from the first film, while Deadline reports that Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis will also be returning for their original roles. Moranis’ return is especially surprising to fans, as he has essentially been retired from acting for over a decade aside from a handful of TV appearances, and has turned down offers to return for the recent Ghostbusters films. He has also notably not appeared in a theatrical film since 1996.

New additions in Spaceballs 2 will include Keke Palmer, and Bill Pullman’s son Lewis; the latter of whom made a splash in Marvel’s Thunderbolts* earlier this year.

Brooks will not be directing the sequel – it will instead be helmed by Josh Greenbaum, with a script by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez and Josh Gad. Per Deadline, Spaceballs 2 is being described as “a non-prequel non-reboot sequel part two but with reboot elements franchise expansion film.”

The 1987 cult classic famously spoofed the original Star Wars trilogy, while also poking fun at 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Wizard of Oz, Alien, Transformers and more.
