Robert De Niro calls Martin Scorsese to say “good night” in viral TikTok trend: “Sleep well dear”

Martin Scorsese was filmed receiving a call from Robert De Niro wishing him good night, following a recent TikTok trend.

The wholesome #goodnightbro trend has seen men calling their friends to wish them “good night” or “sweet dreams”, often to the bemusement of the person receiving the call. Many have said it highlights the male loneliness epidemic, where men feel isolated by not being able to express their feelings or check in on the people they care about.

Now, a video has emerged of Goodfellas director Scorsese being confused by a call from De Niro. The pair have worked together on 10 films, including Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, and The Irishman, in a partnership that has lasted since 1973.

Egged on by his daughter Francesca Scorsese, who filmed the clip for the Tribeca Film Festival TikTok account, the director answers a call from De Niro, who says “calling to say good night and sleep tight”. Scorsese replies “OK” and “Thank you” as both men awkwardly chuckle.

De Niro then asks: “Wanna Facetime?”, before both speak on a video call. The pair discuss when they will meet the next morning before De Niro says “sleep well dear”, blowing a kiss, to which Scorsese replies: “Thank you my love, bye” before bursting into laughter.

Following the call, Martin Scorsese speaks to his daughter, who is still filming, remarking how he usually has very short calls with his friend, and brands the moment “a big mystery”. Francesca then reveals it was for TikTok, to which her father exclaims: “That’s what that was? A trend thing?”.

In May, Apple TV+ announced a five-part documentary on the director, titled Mr Scorsese, in which Robert De Niro will contribute among other collaborators. Recently, the filmmaker announced he will team up with Leonardo DiCaprio for a seventh feature film in the action thriller Carthage Must Be Destroyed.
