Nick Offerman has offered his thoughts on theories that his Parks And Recreation character, Ron Swanson, would vote for Donald Trump.

Throughout the sitcom, the grouchy character displayed certain conservative characteristics, although he is revealed to be a Libertarian in the show (a political alignment that believes in personal freedom and minimal government intervention).

This has led to certain Republican social media users claiming Swanson would be a Trump supporter, something Offerman vehemently disagrees with. Speaking to Indiewire, he let his feeling be known.

“Dumb people insist that Ron Swanson would’ve voted for Trump. And I don’t deign to answer myself,” he said. “I take it to Mike Schur, the main creator of Ron, and he said, ‘Swanson would’ve despised Trump, because Ron loved capitalism. And Trump made the stupidest move you could make as a capitalist, which is to go into public service’”.

As for what the character would think of the current US President, the actor said: “He would think he’s an absolute idiot. He would also despise him because he’s disrespectful to women and many others. And that’s just an example of all the people and value sets that Ron would despise, because Ron is a good person”.

This is not the first time the star has hit out at conservatives using Ron Swanson to send political messages. In early June, Nick Offerman replied to a X (formerly Twitter) user posting a meme of Swanson to criticise Pride Month, writing: “Ron was best man at a gay wedding you dumb fuck. #HappyPride”.

Parks And Recreation ran for seven seasons between 2009 and 2015, with a special revival airing in 2020 during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Recently, Offerman’s co-star Adam Scott revealed he can’t watch the show because it makes him “sad”. He also offered his thoughts on a potential reboot.
