During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she said she was more than eight months pregnant while filming reshoots of a fight scene, but still managed to do all her own stunts.

“During this fight sequence, we came back to it a few times to add a few elements to it, and in this clip, I’m actually eight and a half months pregnant,” Atwell told Fallon, before a preview clip was was shown on the show. “I’m serious, yes!”

She went on to say she was well supported on set throughout, adding: “I have to say, I was taken such good care of. Everyone was so supportive and they were like, ‘Oh, you can sit down, and we’ll have a stunt double do it.’ And I was like, ‘No! I’ve worked too hard. Let me do it.’ So I did it, and here it is.”

The stunts in the film earned Tom Cruise a five-minute standing ovation upon its premiere at Cannes, with him going on to share that he had ” a lot of pre-stunt rituals that keep me alive”, explaining that “a lot of thought goes into it, and they are very complex and very interesting.”

While those in Cannes loved it, critics were a little more mixed, with those leaving the initial critic’s screenings praising the action but criticising an over-stuffed plot.

In a four-star review of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, NME wrote: “Away from the stunts, a character returning from the first Mission: Impossible and a montage of key moments from other films in the series will delight fans, while a small role for Severance star Tramell Tillman as a submarine commander is an unexpected highlight. There’s ultimately lots to love about Final Reckoning and if this is the end, Cruise and Co are finishing on a high.”

In other Tom Cruise-related news, Top Gun 3 is in the pipeline, and the actor confirmed that he is “working” on it.

He said he is currently in the ideas phase of where to take the storyline. “Yeah, we’re thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what’s possible,” he said on Australia’s Today. “It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so all of these things we’re working on, we’re discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick.”

Cruise originated the role of Captain Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in Top Gun in 1986, before reprising it in 2022 in Top Gun: Maverick.
