Matthew McConaughey leads tributes to victims of devastating Texas flash floods
Matthew McConaughey has led the tributes to the victims of the devastating flash floods that have impacted his home state of Texas.
Since July 4, extreme flash flooding has affected central Texas, with 109 people confirmed to have died at the time of writing. Many of those killed were children attending an all-girl Christian summer camp for the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
Several months of rainfall fell in the space of a few hours after the Guadalupe River burst its banks, with experts describing it as one of the worst freak weather accidents of the last 100 years.
Among those to speak out on behalf of the victims is McConaughey, who was born and raised in Texas. Writing on X, he said: “At least 70 lives have been lost, many more are unaccounted for, and countless Texans are hurting – inside and out.”

“If you’re able, please lend a helping hand where and how you can,” he added. “It’s gonna be a long road ahead, but right now the shock, the pain, and the chaos need the steady hand of a neighbor.”
He concluded: “Texans are some of the most resilient and generous people on the planet.”
Lana Del Rey posted on Instagram: I want to say how sorry I am for so many people’s losses in Kerr County and beyond in Texas. We’ve been thinking of you every day since the floods. All of my prayers are with you every moment of the day this week and may all the angels be with you as you search for even more lost loved ones.”
“I’m so sorry for everyone who’s going through this,” she added. “It’s truly unprecedented and I can’t even imagine it. All my love.”
Billie Eilish shared a video that highlighted cuts to the National Weather Service by the Trump administration, and wrote: “This is so sad, sending love to Texas.”
Shakira, who played in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday (July 5), shared a link to a local crisis response charity and confirmed that a portion of proceeds from the gig would be donated. “Our hearts and prayers are with those affected by the flood in central Texas,” she wrote. “Your help is important and appreciated.”
Dear San Antonio,
Our hearts and prayers are with those affected by the flood in Central Texas.
We are donating a portion of tonight’s show proceeds to Catholic Charities of San Antonio, who are providing disaster relief to the families impacted.

Several other Texas natives have spoken out, including Miranda Lambert, whose pet charity Mutt Nation will be helping displaced animals in the region, as well as Maren Morris and Hilary Duff.
Search efforts are continuing for a fifth day, with dozens of people still missing. Weather conditions are forecast to clear in the coming days, with President Trump expected to visit the area on Friday (July 11).
