The new title of the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie is causing some debate about fans over spoilers.

Released last week (May 1), Thunderbolts* stars Florence Pugh at the head of an all-star cast of Marvel supporting characters, who come together to seek revenge on their former employer, government chief Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus).

In the closing moments of the film, the team confront Valentina, having defeated Sentry (Lewis Pullman), a god-like being who is the result of her experiments. In an attempt to escape retribution, she pushes them into a press conference where she announces them as The New Avengers, lying that this was her plan all along.

Following the release of the film, castmembers were seen replacing posters for Thunderbolts* with ones saying The New Avengers, with the asterisk in the original title referring to this new name. However, not everyone was happy with the idea of the film’s end twist being part of the marketing.

On X (formerly Twitter), a user lamented: “They really said ‘fuck anyone who haven’t seen the movie yet’”; while another said: “Actually hate this marketing. It just doesn’t work”.

Another pointed to fans who don’t know about the Thunderbolts’ comic book history, saying: “spoilers like this don’t make sense to me”; While another protested the change coming less than a week after release.

“So I guess just fuck people who don’t have the time or money to go see this shit opening day huh?” they wrote.

One compared it to past spoilers, such as Mark Ruffalo accidentally revealing the end of Avengers: Infinity War.

“I think the ‘New Avengers’ reveal is worse because they revealed it while the film was still in theaters and didn’t even bother giving many people a chance to see the movie. There was no need to rush it” they argued.

Others didn’t see the issue, pointing to Captain America: Brave New World putting Harrison Ford’s Red Hulk in advertising for the movie.

“Spoilers is showing Red Hulk in the commercials, not changing the name of the new group of Avengers” one wrote, while another added: “Bruh, just go see the movie. There was no way you WEREN’T going to know if you waited after opening weekend”.

Thunderbolts* opened at number one in the United States, making $74million (£55million) domestically and $160million (£119.8million) worldwide. Recently, Florence Pugh talked about how she had to fight to perform a breathtaking stunt for the movie.
