Marina Diamandis says Charli XCX feud is over and that she “fully deserves” ‘Brat’ success

Marina Diamandis has said that her feud with Charli XCX is over, and that the latter “fully deserves” all the success from her ‘Brat’ album.

The singer, also known as MARINA, had an infamous falling out with Charli XCX around 10 years ago.

It came following them both being huge on Tumblr back in the 2010s due to the visual aesthetics seen in their respective albums, ‘True Romance’ and ‘Electra Heart’. Around this time they also toured together, however a Charli photoshoot led to them falling out.

It took place in 2015 when the ‘Fancy’ singer held a photoshoot that drew parallels to the art seen for MARINA’s single ‘Immortal’ – with both featuring neon coloured fruit. MARINA called out Charli by writing “Imagery is artistic property. Please respect your fellow artists,” on social media, and the latter responded: “You know what, sometimes you do a photoshoot standing in front of a plant, sometimes you do a photoshoot in black and white, sometimes you wear purple eyeshadow.

“Sometimes you shoot with the same photographer a fellow artist has shot with. That’s just how things happen in the industry I work in.”

The feud continued for years, and in 2023 Charli even revealed that the two of them still didn’t follow one another on her private Instagram account, @brat_360. She did, however, say that while she “did [still] feel negatively years later”, there was “no negativity” anymore as “our worlds just don’t cross”.

Now, it seems that the disagreement has finally been put to one side as Diamandis has said in a new interview that the praise for the ‘Brat’ album is well deserved. The comments also come after she sent Charli a message last summer, saying that the “courageous” song ‘Girl, So Confusing’ moved her to tears.

“I think these moments are important. It was sweet to see people respond to that,” Marina told Rolling Stone, looking back at the discussion they had last year. “I love her work and it’s so inspiring to see what she did with ‘Brat’. She just fully deserves it.”

Before their falling out, the two of them worked together on a song called ‘Just Desserts’ in 2013, although the song was never officially released. It is still available on each of their YouTube channels, however.

‘Brat’ had a huge impact last year, leading to a months-long Brat Summer, a groundbreaking remix album, sold-out arena tours and three Grammy Awards.

‘Brat’ also went on to be named NME‘s best album of 2024, with Karen Gwee writing: “‘Brat’ as cultural sensation was a sight to behold, to be sure. But ‘Brat’ as an album – the record at the core of the rollout, the music beneath the marketing – is quite simply exceptional… This album is not only peak Charli, but a new bar set for modern pop.”

As for MARINA, the singer has today shared her new album ‘PRINCESS OF POWER’, which marks her sixth studio record and first since 2021’s ‘Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land’.
