Jimmy Buffett’s Cause of Death Revealed

Jimmy Buffett‘s website has revealed the legendary singer-songwriter and entrepreneur’s cause of death.

The 76-year-old musician passed away at his home in Sag Harbor on Long Island, New York, on Friday (Sept. 1) from skin cancer, according to a statement on his website, which was updated after the initial news of his death on Saturday.

The “Margaritaville” singer had been battling Merkel cell skin cancer for four years, the post reads. The disease if a rare type of skin cancer that usually appears as a single painless lump on sun-exposed skin and tends to spread quickly to other parts of the body, according to the National Cancer Institute and the Mayo Clinic.

Buffett continued performing while undergoing cancer treatments, according to the statement. His last performance was a surprise 45-minute set during a Mac McAnally concert in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, on July 2.

The news of Buffett’s death was confirmed on his website and social media accounts. He was “surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs,” according to his site.

Renowned for his wildly enthusiastic audiences, known as “Parrotheads,” Buffett — a former correspondent for Billboard magazine — had 13 Billboard Hot 100 charting singles, including seven top 40 hits and one top 10, as well as 40 entries on the Billboard 200 albums chart throughout his career.

He also built a billion-dollar personal fortune with a series of Margaritaville and LandShark Bar & Grill restaurants across the U.S., as well as licensing agreements for Margaritaville tequila, shoes, cruises, pre-packaged food items and an Atlantic City casino.
