Jeff Lynne “absolutely gutted” to have cancelled final ELO shows

Jeff Lynne has issued a statement following the cancellation of the final Electric Light Orchestra shows.

The band were due to play the closing show of their ‘Over And Out’ farewell tour at BST Hyde Park on Sunday night (July 13), the final scheduled concert of the group’s long career. However, the day before, it was confirmed that the show would not go ahead due to “a systemic infection”.

It came just days after ELO also cancelled their penultimate show at Manchester’s Co-Op Live on Thursday (July 10), just minutes before they were due to take to the stage.

Now, Lynne has shared a statement on the cancellations, saying he’s “now at home recuperating.”

“I was absolutely gutted to have to cancel the final two shows,” he said. “I send my heartfelt thanks to all of the fans as well as my band and crew for all their support and love.”

When news broke the BST slot wouldn’t be going ahead, organisers shared that Lynne was “in the care of a team of doctors who have advised him that performing is simply not possible at this time nor will he be able to reschedule.”

Their statement continued: “The legacy of the band and his longtime fans are foremost in Jeff’s mind today – and while he is so sorry that he cannot perform, he knows that he must focus on his health and rehabilitation at this time.”

Organisers later confirmed that the entire show had been cancelled, with ticket holders to be refunded and contacted directly by their ticket agent with further details. Visit here for more information.

The farewell tour has been beset with health issues, with Lynne having to perform with a broken hand earlier this month. Fans at other shows had also noted on social media that Lynne had been brought a chair on stage as he appeared to be “shaken up”.

Lynne had spoken previously about the importance of finishing ELO’s on-stage career at Hyde Park, saying: “It seems like the perfect place to do our final show. We couldn’t be more excited to share this special night in London with our UK fans. As the song goes, ‘We’re gonna do it One More Time!’”

Support acts were later confirmed as The Doobie Brothers, Steve Winwood and Dhani Harrison, while the full host of artists that were set to join Lynne included W. H. Lung, Cats in Space, High Fade, Neckbreakers, Bobbie Dazzle and Bec O’Malley.
