It looks like Deftones are teasing a new single

Deftones perform in 2025

Deftones have taken to social media to tease what appears to be a new single. Check it out below.

The announcement comes just days after the Chino Moreno-led band played a huge headline show in London, and used the set to suggest that new music was on the horizon.

During their performance, they got fans talking by showing a projection on the side screens that read “Private Music”, and had “X.VII.MMXXV distributed by Deftones, all rights reserved.” written underneath.

The Roman numerals translate to July 10 2025, leading to some speculating that highly-anticipated new music could be announced on that day.

Now, with just two days to go until we find out what the announcement is officially about, the band have shared another teaser on Instagram. In the post, they shared two stills from what appears to be a music video. The first has white writing over the top that reads: “Negative space in cycles caught on our radar”, while the second reads “We’ve been waiting here patiently locked in this state clocking our time”.

Although it isn’t a lot to go on, it does seem likely that the stills are from a music video for a new song. It also appears, based on the photos, that bassist Fred Sablan is in the band permanently. If so, he takes the place of Sergio Vega, who departed from the line-up in 2022.

It also makes sense that the post is hinting at new material, as the past two years have seen Deftones tease that a new album is on the way, which will mark the follow-up to 2020’s ‘Ohms’.

In September 2023, for instance, the band teased an upcoming full-length album and suggested that it was due to arrive in 2024, although this never materialised.

In Spring 2024, they then shared another update on their new LP and said that they were adding the final touches to the recording. “[We] have a whole record recorded all musically,” Moreno said. “And it’s pretty much my job right now to finish up the vocals… We’re not really in a rush. We want it to be great. I think that’s most important. But it is coming, and, yeah – it’s really good.”

Later that year, guitarist Stephen Carpenter said that the new music was sounding like “a continuation of ‘Ohms’ and ‘Koi [No Yokan’], that’s what I would say” (via Metal Injection). It is also heavily rumoured that the currently unannounced album has been produced by Nick Raskulinecz (Alice In Chains, Foo Fighters).

More about the teasers is set to be revealed shortly, and the announcement is most likely set to arrive on Thursday (July 10).

The hints at “Private Music” at their London show came just one day after Deftones were set to perform on the Other Stage at Glastonbury 2025, but were forced to pull out at the last minute due to sickness. Skepta was enlisted as a last-minute replacement.
