Is ‘The Final Reckoning’ the last ‘Mission: Impossible’ film?
Almost 30 years after Ethan Hunt first debuted on screens, the Mission: Impossible franchise appears to be heading towards a conclusion.
Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning serves as a direct sequel to 2023’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, as Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) looks to shut down an AI threat called the Entity.
Other cast members in the sequel include Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny, Angela Bassett, Esai Morales, and Pom Klementieff.
The film’s marketing suggests The Final Reckoning is some kind of culmination of the series, with the tagline: “Every choice, every mission, has all led to this.”
Is Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning the last film in the series?

While the financial success of Mission: Impossible suggests the franchise will continue in some capacity, it’s unclear whether this is Tom Cruise’s final bow as Ethan Hunt.
In interviews, Cruise has been vague on the subject. “I’d rather just people see it and enjoy and we’ve had an amazing time doing it and it’s been a lot of fun, and I just want you all to enjoy it,” he said during the Cannes Film Festival (via Variety). “Enjoy this and know everything is the culmination has come to this moment right now.”
When asked if it’s the last film by Entertainment Tonight, Cruise teased: “They don’t call it final for nothing.”
Director Christopher McQuarrie has similarly been hesitant around the question. Speaking about The Final Reckoning with Empire earlier this year, he said: “It is, I hope, the satisfying conclusion to a 30-year story arc. I’m pretty confident that people are going to feel that the title was appropriate.”
What is Tom Cruise working on next?
After Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Tom Cruise will star in an untitled film from The Revenant and Birdman director Alejandro G. Iñárritu.
The film, which is set to be released on October 2, 2026, will also star Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed, and Emma D’Arcy.
