Gears Of War was first released in 2006 as an Xbox 360 exclusive with the third-person shooter spawning a number of sequels. Earlier this year it was confirmed the franchise was finally heading to PlayStation, with a remastered edition of the original game.
“As we approach the 20th anniversary of Gears Of War in 2026, we’re reflecting on what this franchise means. It’s about the stories we’ve told, the friendships we’ve built, and the unforgettable moments we’ve shared together. With Gears Of War: Reloaded, we’re opening that door to more players than ever,” Microsoft said when it first announced the remaster, calling it “the definitive way to experience the game that started it all.”
An early access beta test for Gears Of War: Reloaded took place over the weekend, but fans have expressed their disappointment with the updated game.
“I played 2 games during the beta, and although I knew it was a remaster of a remaster, I was more disappointed than I expected. It’s clear this only exists to move Gears to PlayStation but I’m not 100 per cent sure a shooter from 20 years ago is going to hook new long term players. I could be wrong but I predict this game will have a hard player drop off within a week or two,” wrote one fan on reddit.
This was the worst gaming weekend I've had in months. Empty lobbies, broken lobbies that would stack players but never load into a match, bullets will often not connect to enemies, constant quit outs, and no team work. https://t.co/r4nYGlRcEt pic.twitter.com/woi7LiAjCZ

“I’ve been so excited for this. Before it was even rumoured, I just secretly hoped it would come to PS5 some day as it was one of my fave 360 titles. This beta has been massively disappointing. I had high hopes but it just feels super rushed and rough,” said another, with many players complaining about poor performance, bugs and issues with cross-play.
The initial Beta was extended after complaints from fans. “We heard you. More maps. More modes. More time,” the team wrote on social media. Responding to a new wave of complaints, the Gears Of War community team said: “Our goal for the Beta was to test and evaluate online multiplayer systems, cross-platform play, and game stability – and test we did. We appreciate your time and feedback.”
Gears Of War: Reloaded will launch August 26 for Xbox Series X/S consoles, PC and PlayStation 5. It will also be available as a Day One release on Xbox Game Pass.
In other news, gaming fans have taken to social media to celebrate the fifth anniversary of “masterpiece” sequel, The Last Of Us Part 2.
