David Bowie’s final years to be celebrated in huge new box set ‘I Can’t Give Everything Away (2002-2016)’
The final years of David Bowie‘s career are set to be celebrated in a huge new box set, ‘I Can’t Give Everything Away (2002-2016)’ – check out all the details below.
Set for release on September 12, the new box set is the sixth in a reissue series which has so far included: ‘Five Years’ (1969–1973)’, ‘Who Can I Be Now? (1974–1976)’, ‘A New Career in a New Town (1977–1982)’, ‘Loving The Alien’ (1983–1988)’ and ‘Brilliant Adventure (1992–2001)’.
The CD box set will include faithfully reproduced mini-vinyl versions of the original albums where possible, with the CDs gold-plated as opposed to the usual silver. The vinyl box set contains the same content as the CD set, and will be pressed on audiophile 180g vinyl.
Fans are advised to stay tuned for pre-order links.
Created alongside Bowie’s co-producer Tony Visconti, the box set is named after the closing track of ‘Blackstar‘, Bowie’s final studio album. Released only days before he died in 2016, the record had hinted at the star’s ill health prior to his passing, and has long since been a subject of fascination for fans convinced it served as his official farewell, with many claiming that its lyrics can be interpreted as the singer tackling his own mortality.
The latest instalment consists of 12 CDs, 18 vinyl records and a digital download and streaming format. There’s also an accompanying book for the physical box sets, featuring previously unpublished notes, drawings and handwritten lyrics by Bowie.
It’ll also include photographs by Sukita, Jimmy King, Frank W. Ockenfels 3 and more, as well as memorabilia and technical notes on the albums by co-producer Visconti, with design notes coming from Jonathan Barnbrook.

As detailed in a press release about the box set, 2002’s ‘Heathen’ was the first record Bowie and Visconti had worked on together in 22 years. Reflecting on working on it together in a New York studio, Visconti said it reminded him of the Berlin years. “There was no control room,” he said.
“The console was at one end of the studio and the band was placed at the other end. The acoustics were quite live and from my experience of making ‘Heroes’ at Hansa Studios in Berlin, in the huge Grand Hall, I wanted to make these acoustics work for us.”
It’s 2003 follow-up ‘Reality’ saw Bowie writing and recording with his new touring band, giving the record a more “thrusty” sound, as Bowie was said to have put it at the time. They then hit the road on ‘A Reality Tour’, which is reflected in the box set for the first time in a re-sequenced order, to better reflect the set lists of the Dublin shows.
After a decade away from the studio, session for huge comeback album ‘The Next Day‘ then took place in secret. “We vowed not to tell a soul that David and we were making a new album – and that even included our domestic partners,” said Visconti of the time. “His two-fold purpose was to write and create without pressure from the outside, plus he wanted its release to be a complete surprise.
“It all worked out great, except when he was spotted a few times walking to and from The Magic Shop studio in Noho, Manhattan, raising quizzical eyebrows. I was stopped once by a fan who recognised me and asked, ‘Is David Bowie making a new album?’ I said, ‘Absolutely not!’ Later, when we had rough mixes of our efforts, I was walking around Manhattan with a big smile on my face. No one could possibly know that I was listening to new Bowie songs on my earbuds.”
