Danny Dyer’s sweary speech cut from BAFTAs broadcast
Danny Dyer‘s sweary acceptance speech was cut down from the BAFTA TV awards broadcast.
During last night’s (May 11) ceremony, the actor took home the Best Male Comedy Performance award for his turn in Mr. Bigstuff.
However, the speech that the BBC ended up broadcasting was edited slightly after Dyer used a few instances of swearing.
“What a touch! Comedy performance. I thought my acting was so bad it was funny. I want to thank Sky for giving our show a shot…,” he began, before a partially-muted version of him declaring: “Fucking hell, I’m choked up,” was aired.
The actor went on to dedicate the award to writer and fellow star Ryan Sampson, joking: “One of the greatest things to come out of Rotherham – that’s not saying much.
“But one of the best actors this country’s ever produced, I’m telling you. Never done the same thing twice. Which is not something I can say.
“He wrote this part for me, so you know… I’m getting choked up again,” he added, before the broadcast edited out a “fuck me”.
Dyer wrapped up the speech by shouting out to his daughters Sunnie and Dani, the actor saying in another subsequently-edited moment: “I’ve done it girls, I’ve fucking done it!”
Show host Alan Cumming went on to apologise for the star’s language, telling the audience: “I’ve been asked to apologise for the naughty language there.”
Other big winners of the night included Industry‘s Marisa Abela, who won Leading Actress for season three, while Baby Reindeer‘s Jessica Gunning took home Best Supporting Actress, Gavin & Stacey‘s Ruth Jones won Best Female Comedy Performance, and Joe Lycett took the Best Entertainment Performance gong.
Additionally, Blue Lights won the prestigious Best Drama Series award, while Alma’s Not Normal took home Best Scripted Comedy and Shōgun was named Best International Programme.
In other news, Blur‘s Graham Coxon recently responded to the “flipping bizarre” moment that Dyer and Robbie Williams covered ‘Parklife’ at the latter’s BST Hyde Park show last summer.
“I saw a clip of Robbie Williams and Danny Dyer doing ‘Parklife’,” he told the Guardian. “It’s flipping bizarre, although I do like Danny Dyer. That song is overplayed now. People want to have a knees-up, like ‘Knees Up Mother Brown’ or ‘Roll Out the Barrel’.”
