Coldplay to re-issue albums on LPs made from recycled plastic bottles

Coldplay have announced the re-issue of several albums on LPs made from recycled plastic bottles – find out more below.

The Chris Martin-led band are continuing their long-running mission for sustainability through the re-release of their albums as clear 140g EcoRecords made from recycled plastic bottles.

Through EcoRecords’ injection-moulding technology, the manufacturing process will see the reduction of carbon emissions by a whopping 85 per cent when compared to traditional vinyl production.

Coldplay’s albums being re-issued on clear EcoRecords are 2000’s ‘Parachutes’, 2002’s ‘A Rush of Blood to the Head’, 2005’s ‘X&Y’, 2008’s ‘Viva La Vida’, 2011’s ‘Mylo Xyloto’, 2014’s ‘Ghost Stories’, 2015’s ‘A Head Full of Dreams’, 2019’s ‘Everyday Life’ and 2021’s ‘Music of the Spheres’ – the EcoRecords LP re-issues are available for pre-order now.

EcoRecords’ process utilises 100 per cent polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) for its LP manufacturing – it’s a lightweight, durable material designed for reduced shipping emissions and end-of-life environmental impact.

The process sees each 140g LP constructed form an average of nine rPET plastic bottles that are cleaned and processed into small pellets, where they’re molded into records. For their LPs, Coldplay have opted to use strictly rPET materials.

This isn’t the first time Coldplay have released an album via EcoRecords – their 2024 record ‘Moon Music’ was launched on 100 per cent rPET EcoRecord, marking the world’s first album released in the 140g EcoRecord rPET LP format.

Coldplay recently performed ‘Speed Of Sound’ in full for the first time as a band since 2016. The song was released as the lead single from their 2005 album ‘X&Y‘, but frontman Martin had expressed his reluctance to play it live, admitting that “we never got it right”. Though the song has been performed acoustically or partially, the recent performance in El Paso marked the first time the band have fully played the song in nearly a decade.

In other news, Coldplay will be playing a series of huge stadium shows in August this year, where they will take up residency at Hull’s Craven Park Stadium and London’s Wembley Stadium – find any remaining tickets to their UK stadium tour here.

It’s the continuation of their record-breaking ‘Music Of The Spheres’ tour, which recently became the biggest rock tour of all time by grossing $945.7million and selling 8.8million tickets since it began in March 2022. The shows have also been praised for “setting a new standard” when it comes to an eco-conscious approach to live music.

Elsewhere, NME spoke to Chris Martin in an exclusive interview last year about their 10th album ‘Moon Music‘.

He updated us about the band’s previous plans to retire from music after 12 albums. Martin affirmed to us that “it is 12 albums for sure, but we’re going to be a bit later than that. There’s one more thing, which is a musical. [That’s] album number 11, but that might have to come out after album 12 because of how long musicals take to animate.”
