CMAT has released her new country-inspired single ‘Aw, Shoot’ – take a listen below.

The Irish musician has dropped her new song as her first new music since her album last year ‘Crazymad, For Me‘.

CMAT opened up about the backstory behind the melancholy track, writing: “So there I was, in Paris, France, in a rented flat. I was trying to write songs but it wasn’t going very well at all. I was drinking three bottles of wine a day (Cote du Provence) and I didn’t have any human contact for maybe two weeks, and I was going a little bit crazy, voices in my head etc etc.

“One evening there was a knock at the door. Who could it be?! I opened the door to find an American girl, who said the following: “Oh! You’re not my friend!” and then turned and walked away. Turns out she got the floors mixed-up, American system vs European flooring system. This was actually a seminal plot point in my favourite tv show Emily in Paris.

“And then? Well, I properly lost my mind. But on the bright side, I got a banger out of it!”

NME interviewed CMAT at the BRITs ceremony in February, where she opened up about her love for “weird” Kylie Minogue: “She is the love of my life and the most important woman. I do think we should have a religion dedicated to her,” CMAT said of Minogue, who was given the Global Icon award on the night. “She was omnipresent when I was growing up because I was five years old when the ‘Fever’ album came out.

“We didn’t really have any music that wasn’t the radio, I wasn’t exposed to any alternative music or anything until I was much older. So when I was exposed to the radio I think my brain really clung onto anything that was weird — and Kylie’s music is inherently quite alternative and quite strange.

“It’s structurally different, it doesn’t follow trends. Her music videos and visuals are so inspiring too because they’re so well thought out. So for me, she was just this beacon of weirdness. That’s the only way I can describe her.”

In our four-star review of ‘Crazymad, For Me’, NME wrote of the record: “CMAT will have you in stitches one second and emotionally suckerpunched the next. It’s brilliant. Inventive, intoxicating, deliciously camp – she continues to transcend all expectations and remains absolutely unmatched.”

In other news, CMAT has revealed a plan she hatched to film an epic music video with Jedward.
