Ariana Grande Says She Used to Get a ‘Ton’ of Filler & Botox Because She ‘Felt Like Hiding’

Ariana Grande got vulnerable in her Beauty Secrets video for Vogue on Tuesday (Sept. 12), where she opened up about how her relationship with beauty has changed over the years.

“Being exposed to so many voices at a young age, and especially when people have things to say about your appearance at a young age, it’s really hard to know what’s worth hearing or not. When you’re 17, you don’t really know that yet,” she explained in the clip, in which she ran through her 1960’s inspired cat eye makeup. “Over the years, I used makeup as a disguise or something to hide behind with more and more hair and more thicker the eyeliner — that can be so beautiful at times and I still have love for it. I think as I get older, I don’t love that being the intention behind it anymore. I think of it as self expression and accentuating what is here. Our relationships to beauty is so personal, we’re here talking about beauty secrets. Isn’t the secret that we all just want to feel our best and be loved?”

While doing her lips with her R.E.M. Beauty Practically Permanent Lip Stain Marker, the “Thank U, Next” singer revealed that she has had a “ton” of lip filler and botox over the years. “I stopped in 2018 because I felt too much. I just felt like hiding, you know?” she shared, immediately tearing up. “Didn’t expect to get emotional. For a long time, beauty was about hiding for me, and now I feel like maybe it’s not. Ever since I stopped getting fillers and botox, I know for me, it was just like, ‘Oh, I just want to see my well-earned cry lines and smile lines.’ I hope my smile lines get deeper and deeper and I laugh more and more. Aging can be such a beautiful thing. Now, might I get a facelift in 10 years? Might, yeah! These are just thoughts that I feel like we should be able to discuss when we’re talking about beauty secrets. F— it, let’s lay it all out there.”

Overall, Grande said that makeup is a huge part of her artistry, and that she was actually inspired by drag makeup. “I love drag so much. It is so inspiring to me,” she explained. “When I was on Broadway, doing 13, I used to go afterwards to see the queens and sometimes I would end up singing, and it was just a really joyous and important part of my life.”
