A$AP Rocky Recalls Trying to Get a Role in a ‘Star Wars’ Film: ‘My Audition Was Trash’

A$AP Rocky is looking back on his audition for a role in the iconic Star Wars franchise, which he didn’t end up getting after a “trash” tryout.

Rocky revealed in an interview with Variety published Tuesday (May 7) that he auditioned to play Lando Calrissian in the 2018 prequel Solo: A Star Wars Story, which Billy Dee Williams originally helmed.

“I auditioned for Star Wars — for Lando — and my audition was trash. I was trash that day,” the Harlem native humbly admitted. “My man Childish Gambino [Donald Glover] was a way better Lando than I would’ve provided at that time. And I think he looked a little more like [Billy Dee Williams] than me.”

Though role ended up going to Glover, Lord Pretty Flacko is still open to wielding a lightsaber in another Star Wars role down the line. “Hell yeah,” he replied when asked if he’d audition again for the franchise.

While he missed out on the Star Wars role, A$AP Rocky is flexing his acting chops in Spike Lee’s next film, Highest 2 Lowest. A trailer for the movie starring Denzel Washington and featuring Ice Spice’s acting debut arrived Monday (May 5).

Rocky plays Denzel’s son Yung Felon in the film, which is said to be loosely based on Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 noir High and Low. The rapper-fashion designer explained on The Run-Through With Vogue that the Oscar winner was pulling up to set bumping modern Memphis rappers such as Pooh Shiesty and Moneybagg Yo. “Can’t make this up,” Rocky said. “He likes to listen to Memphis rappers, but modern Memphis rappers.”

Look for the crime thriller to hit theaters on Aug. 22 before going to Apple TV+ on Sept. 5.
