Ozzy Osbourne is dead at the age 76, just weeks after Black Sabbath’s final concert. “It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning,” reads a statement released by the family from Birmingham. They continued: “He was with his family and surrounded by love.” Seventeen of his solo singles made the top 10 of Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Songs chart. He started with the band Black Sabbath in 1970. His voice helped define what heavy metal became. By voicing Sabbath’s reliably morbid lyrics, clad in the band’s trademark funereal attire, he earned the nickname “The Prince of Darkness.” His death comes just weeks after Black Sabbath’s final concert, which took place on July 5 and netted $190 million, making it the highest-grossing charity concert of all time. Osbourne’s image received an improbable overhaul when he arose as an oddly lovable TV star in the MTV series The Osbournes. Osbourne was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.
