Cillian Murphy in '28 Days Later'

Fans of Danny Boyle’s horror classic 28 Days Later are delighted that the film is available to stream in the UK.

Released in 2002, Cillian Murphy starred as a man who wakes up from a coma in a devastated Britain, 28 days after a zombie outbreak, having to seek out fellow survivors and find refuge from The Infected.

The film was a box office hit and considered a horror classic, spawning a 2007 sequel, 28 Weeks Later, and a new trilogy of films starting with 28 Years Later, released this Friday (June 20). Boyle returns to the director’s chair with a cast that includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Jodie Comer.

Despite its popularity, for a long time UK fans were not able to stream the original film. As recently as November 2024 there was no way to stream or buy 28 Days Later on any digital platform in the UK.

Disney had owned the rights to the independently financed film, but lost them when Sony acquired the rights in anticipation of the upcoming sequels, leaving Disney with just the Searchlight-financed sequel.

Sony had not yet made the film available, although it’s remained available on DVD and Blu-Ray. Now, in the lead up to 28 Years Later the movie has finally landed on BBC iPlayer.

Having aired on TV channel BBC One on June 15, 28 Days Later will be available for free on the BBC’s on demand service until July 15. You can watch the film here.

Fans were delighted with the news. “Literally can’t get the blu-ray for cheap anywhere so will be watching it on telly” wrote one. Another added it was the perfect time to catch up before release, although admitted: “It’s such a Film4 movie, so it feels weird to even see it on a different channel here in the UK”. Film4 was one of the production companies behind the movie, and aired it on their affiliate TV channel.

As part of the promotion for 28 Years Later, a mysterious new website has appeared called a ‘dark web server’, catching up readers as to what has happened since the original films.

Elsewhere, Boyle recently said that the new film is a reaction to Brexit and “retrenchment to older values”. He also has confirmed that Cillian Murphy will return for later sequels.
