Nick Frost is “going to be very protective” of the core ‘Harry Potter’ cast

Nick Frost has shared his stance on protecting the next generation of kids playing the core Harry Potter cast – see what he had to say below.

Frost – who will be playing Hagrid in the upcoming HBO adaptation – recently interviewed with ScreenRant about the series, and spoke on the core cast, who were revealed last week.

The cast for the three principal roles will see Dominic McLaughlin play Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton portraying Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout taking on the role of Ron Weasley.

They were the successful applicants from a pool of over 30,000 after an open casting call last year. McLaughlin is also set to star in Grow, an upcoming comedy series on Sky with Frost later this year, while Stanton played Matilda in Matilda: The Musical on the stage in London from 2023-2024. For Stout, this will be his first major role.

On working with the kids, Frost shared that he has more in common with Hagrid than just his looks: “Look, I’m a dad myself, so I am going to be very protective to the children, and I think that is Hagrid’s — one of the kind of baselines of his relationship with those children. He’s very protective of them, and I honestly can’t wait.”

Elsewhere in his chat with ScreenRant, Frost said of the progress on the series behind-the-scenes: “I’ve had the opportunity to go and see some sets, and they’re growing a Hagrid beard, and I’m seeing the Sorting Hat, and here are some wands. It’s absolutely amazing. Getting the chance to start to learn Francesca’s script and hanging out with [director] Mark Mylod — that’s the reason I wanted to do it in the first place — to get to retell and to be Hagrid. I get a chance to be Hagrid. It is amazing.”

Joining Frost, McLaughlin, Stanton and Stout in the cast are John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, while Paapa Essiedu will play Severus Snape. Janet McTeer has been cast as Minerva McGonagall, with Luke Thallon as Professor Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse as caretaker Argus Filch.

The new version of the hit fantasy series will adapt J.K. Rowling’s seven books over a mammoth 10-year period, with each of the seven books to receive its own season. Filming is expected to begin on the first instalment this summer.

The TV series has been mired in controversy due to Rowling receiving significant backlash for her anti-trans comments, and her support of the UK Supreme Court ruling last month that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex.

Rowling’s stance has seen her at odds with the three stars of the Harry Potter films, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, all of whom have publicly disagreed with her views.
