Sean Penn says Trump lacks “intelligence”, only values “destruction of things and people”

Sean Penn has criticised US President Donald Trump in a new interview, questioning his intelligence and values.

The actor has been critical of America’s current leader, saying he fears he “might try to destroy the world” in a recent interview. When appeared on The Louis Theroux Podcast on Monday (May 12), he delved deeper into what might be the driving force behind the Commander In Chief.

When Theroux pondered whether or not the President was underestimated, Penn remarked: “Well, I think that people will look back and see that he was extremely smart for his time and what it valued. But what he values is so base. I won’t equate that with intelligence. It’s truly void of soul. And really, it actively engages in cruelty often”.

He continued: “To watch that, whether it’s what Elon Musk is doing now for him, with him, I don’t know if there’s any thought behind it at all except to value destruction of things and people. I can’t associate that with any intelligence that’s going to do humankind any good”.
When asked what he believed the politician did value, the star replied: “His own instrument reward system”.

He would go on to describe Trump as: “The tough guy who never was. He was his father’s punk from Queens for a long time. You know, the tall Q-tip guy in school. He got into business. He got around a lot of real tough guys. Gangsters”.

In December, Sean Penn would also criticise the film industry for being “afraid” of Trump biopic The Apprentice. Speaking at The Marrakech Film Festival, he said: “It’s jaw-dropping how afraid this business of mavericks is of a great film like that, one with great, great acting. [It’s amazing] that they too can be as afraid as a piddly little Republican congressman”.
