‘The Office’ spin-off ‘The Paper’ will air this September

A release date has been unveiled for The Office spin-off, titled The Paper, as well as a first image from the show.

According to a report from Variety, an upfront presentation to advertisers revealed that the show will debut on US streaming service Peacock in September. The presentation also featured a first look image of star Domhnall Gleeson, as well as a trailer.

The official synopsis for the show reads: “The documentary crew that immortalised Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it”.

Gleeson will play an idealistic new employee at the paper, with Sabrina Impacciatore co-starring as his managing editor. Oscar Nuñez, the only original cast member from The Office scheduled to return, appears in the trailer as the paper’s accountant, and is disappointed to see the crew he knew from his previous job.

The series is co-created by Greg Daniels, who developed The Office for American TV based on the original show created by Ricky Gervais. It is yet to be revealed when in September the show will air, as well as a network or air date in the UK.

One original character who definitely won’t be showing up is Steve Carell’s Michael Scott. The actor told The Hollywood Reporter last year: “I will be watching but I will not be showing up. It’s just a new thing and there’s really no reason for my character to show up in something like that”.

However, he was quick to praise the idea of the show, as well as its cast. “I’m excited about it, it sounds like a great conceit. I love the idea — I guess it’s set in a failing newspaper company, and I worked with Domhnall Gleeson, who is one of the leads; I did (2022 series) The Patient with him and he’s an excellent actor and a super nice guy so I think it’ll be great”.

In March, Seth Rogen said his recent hit The Studio used the US version of The Office as inspiration for his comedy series.
